Metro urges residents to boil discoloured water in parts of Pretoria

Tshwane says it is aware of discoloured water in Pretoria west and the CBD on Saturday and urges residents to consider safety when consuming the city supplied water.

It has pleaded with residents to filter and boil the water before drinking it.

Ward 59 Councillor Shaun Wilkinson said the water discolouration had continued in his ward on Sunday.

On its social media page the Tshwane metro said: "We are aware that water is discoloured and our water and sanitation team is out investigating."

It said upon preliminary investigations officials discovered that Klapperkop reservoir's level was low due to a faulty pressure reducing valve.

"Sediments going into the system due to the low level might be a factor of the discoloured water."

Tshwane said the affected areas were Sunnyside, Clydesdale, Arcadia, Trevena, parts of Pretoria Central, Muckleneuk and a small part of Hatfield.

"Once the water levels in the Klapperkop reservoirs improve, the sediment will settle and the water colour will return to normality."

This as residents on social media platforms shared videos of brown-looking water.

A resident in Jeff Masemola Street Pretoria Central, Terries Hlongwane, told Rekord: "The water looks very dirty. We don't feel safe at all."

He said he felt as though this was another water disaster in Tshwane.
