A water outage due to a broken water valve along Kaahumanu Avenue closed Baldwin High School and affected areas that included Maui Memorial Medical Center on Monday.

Maui County spokesperson Mahina Martin said that Baldwin "and a few nearby facilities experienced low water pressure" early Monday morning due to a malfunctioning pressure reducing valve. Crews worked to repair the valve and normal water pressure levels were restored around 10:30 a.m., Martin said. She said as far as she was aware, no homes were impacted.

The state Department of Education announced around 8:20 a.m. Monday that Baldwin was closed to in-person learning due to the water outage. By 12:30 p.m., the school announced that it would reopen today on a normal schedule.

Some facilities nearby reported having problems, while others were unaffected.

In an email, a Maui Health spokesperson said Monday that Maui Memorial Medical Center did experience "low water pressure temporarily" due to the issue with the county water line.

"We have response plans in place for situations like this and activated them this morning," the spokesperson said.

Emergency services were not affected but the hospital did postpone "a few" elective procedures Monday morning. But as of noon Monday, the hospital was back to normal operations.

A Kaiser Permanente spokesperson said there was no impact to their facilities, two of which are located just off Kaahumanu Avenue near Baldwin High School.
